If you've come this far, you want to change things. You can do little things or big things, but doing NOTHING is no longer an option.
Start by having a "zero tolerance" attitude towards any type of negative comments or stereotypes about people of size. It is not acceptable
to make "fat jokes" or to otherwise demean people simply because of their size. Speak out in protest when you hear or see things like that.
It's your right and your obligation. That's just one of the "little things."
But you can do bigger things RIGHT NOW! You can print out and sign a
letter already written to President Bush. You can contact your State and/or U.S Congressional Representatives and do the same thing.
If you don't know who your Representatives are, we've got a link right
here so that you can find them and let them know how important it is to you that they take these issues seriously. There are several states (see below) which have passed statutes making
it easier for people to access bariatric surgery. Each of those was passed as the result of patients getting together and making
something happen. YOU can be one of those patients in your state.
Just remember: doing NOTHING is no longer an option. We can work together to make discrimination against people of size as abhorrent to a civilized society as discrimination based on race, gender or religion. You simply must be
willing to spend time working with other people across the country to eliminate size discrimination as the last true bastion of acceptable prejudice.
Find Your Congress Connection!(click here) In addition to the letter to President Bush, you can use that same letter as a form to send to your State and Federal
Representatives. It is only through collective action like this that the changes we need to see from insurance
companies and against discrimination can take place. (Click on the links to locate your congress representative by name or by ZIP Code,. Contact them. Remember, they work for you.)
